I keep forgetting that we’re Not Sure if there’s life on other planets. I read reports on how we’re getting closer to detecting life if it’s out there, and I keep thinking, well, sure it is, just because a) I’m a science fiction geek who takes aliens for granted in stories, and b) it seems sort of arrogant to assume that we’re the only ones around in an enormous, possibly infinite Universe, because my limited understanding of probability suggests that even if it’s a remarkably low chance for life’s conditions to arise, well, there’s quite enough chances out there to turn that low probability into a huge number.
And then scientists say they’re not sure. I need to be reminded of that more often.
But I’m still on the side that says they’re out there. Just cuz, you know, what I said before. And anyway, it would be cool.
