St. Emo's Day
A successful holiday was had by all!

Part of the equation that determined the most depressing day is the weather, and today didn’t disappoint.

Commence party preparations! We decided to make some emo balloons—balloons so bummed and lethargic they can’t even hold themselves up.

There. Lucky we got that balloon holder to keep them from floating away, huh?

The table decorations—the store didn’t have black candles, so we went with blue. The tablecloth is a black cloth with a khanga I brought back from Kenya on top. The pattern is blue roses.

Depressed cat approves of the proceedings.

I thought the beret was a nice touch.
Granted, I didn’t keep this on all evening. I switched to sweatpants, t-shirt, and bath robe after dinner.

Before dinner we had a dramatic reading of “Tear-Water Tea” from Arnold Lobel’s Owl at Home, a story that lists very sad things like stopped clocks and spoons that have fallen behind the stove and will never be seen again.* We had to turn down our playlist full of sad songs for this part.

Dinner was all the food you eat when you don’t feel like making a huge effort—macaroni and cheese, Pillsbury crescent rolls, potstickers, and Coke.

Then it was time for dessert—ice cream right from the carton!

Okay, it was a small carton, but still …

… it was very sad.

Decadent, even, when you fill it with chocolate syrup.
After that,
gondolinchick01 showed up and we all went downstairs to watch Death March of the Penguins and wept over their fate. It was a very emo night all around.
There, wasn’t that cathartic? With luck that got some of the sadness out of our systems. Perhaps our collective mood will improve after this, no?
*We considered Emily Dickinson poems, but decided that she’s just too damn obnoxious.

Next holiday up = Darwin's Birthday! Much more uplifting. There will be a cake with barnacles on it.

Admittedly, this is because I am a fat lazy pigslob. Depression has nothing to do with it.

Her poems became a lot more fun once I discovered that each and every one of them can be sung to the tune of 'The Yellow Rose of Texas'...
Sadly, 'Because I could not stop for Death' has never quite been the same again. :P

I am nobody, who are you? Are you nobody too? They started from this tropic port, aboard this tiny ship.

I think the sad balloons are a particularly nice touch.
And, on a somewhat perkier note, I love your outfit!

Please excuse the equally emo at this point Illinoisian, who may just steal your idea. At least you're not surrounded by cows and meth.
