St. Emo's Day

A successful holiday was had by all!

Photobucket
Part of the equation that determined the most depressing day is the weather, and today didn’t disappoint.

Photobucket
Commence party preparations! We decided to make some emo balloons—balloons so bummed and lethargic they can’t even hold themselves up.

Photobucket
There. Lucky we got that balloon holder to keep them from floating away, huh?

Photobucket
The table decorations—the store didn’t have black candles, so we went with blue. The tablecloth is a black cloth with a khanga I brought back from Kenya on top. The pattern is blue roses.

Photobucket
Depressed cat approves of the proceedings.

Photobucket
I thought the beret was a nice touch.

Granted, I didn’t keep this on all evening. I switched to sweatpants, t-shirt, and bath robe after dinner.

Photobucket
Before dinner we had a dramatic reading of “Tear-Water Tea” from Arnold Lobel’s Owl at Home, a story that lists very sad things like stopped clocks and spoons that have fallen behind the stove and will never be seen again.* We had to turn down our playlist full of sad songs for this part.

Photobucket
Dinner was all the food you eat when you don’t feel like making a huge effort—macaroni and cheese, Pillsbury crescent rolls, potstickers, and Coke.

Photobucket
Then it was time for dessert—ice cream right from the carton!

Photobucket
Okay, it was a small carton, but still …

Photobucket
… it was very sad.

Photobucket
Decadent, even, when you fill it with chocolate syrup.

After that, [livejournal.com profile] gondolinchick01 showed up and we all went downstairs to watch Death March of the Penguins and wept over their fate. It was a very emo night all around.

There, wasn’t that cathartic? With luck that got some of the sadness out of our systems. Perhaps our collective mood will improve after this, no?

*We considered Emily Dickinson poems, but decided that she’s just too damn obnoxious.

It sounds like it went depressingly well :P

Next holiday up = Darwin's Birthday! Much more uplifting. There will be a cake with barnacles on it.

I passed the holiday info on to some of my officemates. Three of us stayed up late (I just got in!) and played Pandemic. We lost and humanity was wiped out through viruses. Twice. Talk about depressing.

That is such a great game.

I eat ice cream out of the carton all the time.

Admittedly, this is because I am a fat lazy pigslob. Depression has nothing to do with it.

We considered Emily Dickinson poems, but decided that she’s just too damn obnoxious.

Her poems became a lot more fun once I discovered that each and every one of them can be sung to the tune of 'The Yellow Rose of Texas'...

Sadly, 'Because I could not stop for Death' has never quite been the same again. :P

It also works with "Theme from Gilligan's Island!!!"

I am nobody, who are you? Are you nobody too? They started from this tropic port, aboard this tiny ship.

I had the exact same experience regarding ED. ;-)

Looks like it was wonde- I mean, terrible. Absolutely depressingly awful. The sad balloons, especially, are just tragically emo.

I love the fact that this holiday exists somewhere. Let's hope it spreads!

I think the sad balloons are a particularly nice touch.

And, on a somewhat perkier note, I love your outfit!

**gasp** HOW is that first picture depressing! Hills! MIST! Lightly sprinkled snow! It looks like Dartmoor or something. Okay, I don't live there, so maybe I don't have the right to comment on pretty-ness.

Please excuse the equally emo at this point Illinoisian, who may just steal your idea. At least you're not surrounded by cows and meth.

Kinda surprised you didn't go with Sylvia Plath.

Rats, my reaction at these pictures clashes with the mood completely. XP

You are awesome, and look gorgeous in your emo-wear. How hard was it for everyone not to crack up during the photos?!?!
