Right, here are the answers—and my commentary on it.
1. I remember, I remember when I lost my mind; there was something so pleasant about that place. “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley.
2. If you’re blue and you don’t know where to go, why don’t you go where fashion sits? “Puttin’ on the Ritz” performed by Taco.
3. In the not-too-distant future—next Sunday, A.D … “Love Theme from Mystery Science Theatre 3000” by Joel and the Joels—from the first four seasons. I’m surprised more of you didn’t get this one!
4. Tale as old as time, true as it can be. Barely even friends, then somebody bends unexpectedly. “Beauty and the Beast” from the movie of the same name, performed by Angela Lansbury. A very pretty song, and one of the most recognizable on this list.
5. I want you to see all of the flowers. We’ll shoot the breeze for hours and hours. “English Garden” by Ringo Starr. Ringo gets a bad rap for his music but I like it, dammit. I also maintain that he’s a pretty damn good drummer.
6. I’m drivin’ a truck, drivin’ a big ol’ truck … “Truck Drivin’ Song” by Weird Al Yankovic. He lives up to his name, too, when you start to hear what the truck driver’s wearing.
7. Well, my baby and me went out late Saturday night. I had my hair piled high and my baby just looked so right. “Rock this Town” by the Stray Cats. The first time I heard this song it was in the context of a Disney music video where a couple of cool kids got harassed by pencils a lot.
8. I’m not feeling all right today, I’m not feeling that great. I’m not catching on fire today—love has started to fade. “Sheep Go To Heaven” by Cake. Try singing along to this on your headphones on the bus: “Go to hell! Gooo to hell! Go to hell!”
9. Les poissons, les poissons, how I LOVE les poissons! Love to chop and to serve little fish! “Les Poissons” from The Little Mermaid, sung by Rene Auberjonois. I would dearly love to see the recording session for this. Just when you thought Star Trek actors had forfeited all their dignity.
10. I can ride the One up to Yonkers, sun on a Yacht on the Yangtze … “Everything To Me” by Rockapella. I didn’t expect anyone but my cheating little sister, who knows most of my music, to get this. I was right. It’s a good song, though: “Gonna saddle up a manatee and dive for gefiltes!” is a standard line.
11. Stars shining bright above you, night breezes seem to whisper ‘I love you.’ “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” most famously by the Mamas and the Papas, though I was listening to another version by something called Opus 1/2. I dunno, I previewed it on iTunes and liked it.
12. Left a good job in the city working for the man every night and day. “Proud Mary” by CCR, although I was listening to the equally famous Tina Turner version. The title of this song seems to remain elusive, as a lot of people call it “Rollin’ on the River.” Understandably.
13. On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair, warm smell of colitas rising up through the air … “Hotel California” by the Eagles
14. I used to live in a two-room apartment: neighbors knockin’ on my wall. “The Apartment Song” by Tom Petty. Contains some of my favorite lyrics ever, because they describe my whole life: “Oh yeah, I’m all right; I just feel a little lonely tonight!” I swear that’s not as emo as it sounds.
15. She’s into superstition—black cats and voodoo dolls. “La Vida Loca,” made famous by Ricky Martin. This song seems to inspire some serious emotions in people.
16. When I was just seventeen I ran away from home to be with all the pretty people; to be on my own. “Legend In My Living Room” by Annie Lennox.
17. My oh my, I’m a restless guy, got a home everywhere I go … “Rambunctious Boy” by John Fogerty.
18. Chewin’ on a piece of grass, walkin’ down the road. “Ventura Highway” by America. I expected more people to get this. Shame on you all!
19. It’s been a hard day’s night, and I’ve been working like a dog! “A Hard Day’s Night” by the Beatles. Y’all got this one. It’s like the Beatles are famous or something.
20. The moon is full and I’m awake and I don’t know how much I can take before I get to angry to be sad! “It’s a War” by Carole King.
21. Just because you left and said good-bye, do you think that I will sit and cry? “Just Because,” performed by John Lennon.
22. When I was five, we’d get up at four, drive all night on the Cornwall shore. “Swimmin’ in the Sea” by Gaelic Storm. I’ll be damned that somebody other than my sister knew this one.
23. ‘Mahna mahna!’ ‘Doo doo doo doo doo!’ “Mahna Mahna” by the Muppets. I’m also surprised more people didn’t get this one.
24. It ain’t no contest, and it sure ain’t no conquest. It’s giving and sharing and a whole lot of caring. “Live Without Love” by Carole King.
25. I’m looking through you, what do I see? “I’m Looking Through You” by the Beatles. What happened to all that recognizing y’all did of the other Beatles song?
26. It was the third of September, a day I’ll always remember, ’cause that was the day that my daddy died. “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” by the Temptations. While this is the first line, it takes forever for it to actually get sung.
27. This land is a lovely green, it reminds me of my own home. Such children I’ve seldom seen, even in my own home. “Jump Up Behind Me” by James Taylor.
28. Well, she got her daddy’s car and she cruised through the hamburger stand now! “Fun, Fun, Fun” by the Beach Boys.
29. Love is a stranger in an open car to tempt you in and drive you far away. “Love is a Stranger” by Eurythmics (Annie Lennox)
30. We’ve had some fun and we’ve had our ups and downs, been down that rocky road, but here was are still around. “Stuck With You” by Huey Lewis & the News
Let’s play again sometime!
