Food!

The traditional: Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, MY GOD THE YAMS, and green beans with mushrooms. Nobody drank wine because Dad’s on call, and he’s really the wine guy—I always drink grape juice anyway, like I’m Mormon or some shit, and if Dad doesn’t bring out the wine Mom forgets about it.

What did you have for dinner tonight?

(Yes, not just the US folks … I like hearing about food, okay?)

Duck a l'orange, home made mashed potatoes, corn spoon-bread and homemade macaroni and cheese. Oh and we had spinach dip and deviled eggs as an appetizer. Realized as we sat down to eat that a vegetable side was never even considered.

Oh and also our duck? We literally had to TRADE IT IN because we opened the butcher's wrap and it had FEET and it's HEAD still attached. I shrieked like a baby and ran from the kitchen the minute I saw the feet - never saw the head at all. We took it to Whole Foods and they took pity on us and gave us a fully dressed duck in exchange, even though we didn't buy it there. Beware specialty butchers - when they send you a whole duck they are NOT kidding around.

They probably thought that's what you wanted. A lot of people would use those parts.

Actually most people I know would be just as surprised and horrified to discover extremities on their meat. :-p I understand those parts are good for stuff, I just don't know how to properly remove all the bits and bobs, not to mention not having time for it. The weird thing is, we looked online for instructions to help us out but all we could find we're instructions on quartering a duck or basically going from alive to the point we were at. My faith in the helpfulness of the Internet was definitely shaken.

Ooh! Sounds good. (Spinach dip counts as a vegetable, right?)

I, too, would not know what to do with a fully equipped duck. I am at a bit of a loss with dressing a turkey, to be honest. Good thing I have family members who do it for me!
