Dammit, why aren't phones and number keypads set up with the same configuration? Makin' my office work take twice as long as it has to.

Nah, the keyboard setup is the right way around for me. It's the damn phones that've got it all wrong.

I got quite curious about this, so I obeyed the Mongoose's Motto. (RikkiTikkiTavi, how you would love google). Voila! http://www.vcalc.net/Keyboard.htm

Several competing theories, but it seems the phone co's did usability research and the calc folks didn't, and all else being equal (two keyboard type devices), people are quicker at the 'phone' version with 1-2-3 on top. Of course, anyone who touch-types is quicker with the numpad.
