Pointless Grumbling

Ah, bugger. It seems my recurring case of Turning Into A Pangolin is … well … recurring. Patches of dry skin sprouting up all over my legs.

I used to think this was a drawback of the dry air I love so much, until I went to Kenya and came down with a case of what my sister called African Spots.* I’ll take scales any day.

Plus, now I have an excuse to hang out on the deck in the sun.

*There is nothing more reassuring than having your doctor look at your back and say, “WHOA! I’ve never seen anything like that before!” Followed by “Here, just smear this stuff on it. The beauty of this is that I don’t even have to diagnose the problem because this stuff clears up ANYTHING.”

African Spots are still much better than what a customer at the pharmacy a friend of mine works for apparently picked up in Africa. (He claimed he'd been there recently. Of course he could have picked it up elsewhere. Whatever it was.)

SKIN WRIGGLING and weeping sore type stuff or whatnot is probably a sign you should go to the ER. Even if you were "just there" three months ago.

(Yes, the guy whined when they told him no, they did NOT have some kinda medication they could recommend over the counter that he'd JUST BEEN to the ER months ago and was totally not going again. My friend and her coworkers called his doctor, as he'd been there for some minor refill thing, and ratted his ass out, and then spent the next two days compulsively disinfecting everything. EVERYTHING.)

GAH, that can't be good for you. If bits of you move of their own accord, you have a problem.

I had a weird streak of fortunes in Africa--I got malaria, a GI infection, a cold (a goddamn COLD I TELL YOU) and the Mystery Skin Condition over the 4 months I was there--but nothing, not even the malaria, was a particularly awful experience.

I actually considered volunteering to get infected with Malaria a couple of years back. I couldn't get the time off work, though.

Odd, I posted a reply to this about our guess of parasites for the wriggly guy, and also outlining my run-ins with injury and illness, but it seeeems to have been eaten.

Short version:

He had a parasite we think.

And I've so far managed to get through life only lightly scathed, with the only serious mysteries being what exactly I did to my feet at that Amtgard event when I was 17ish and how I managed to not need more than ice packs and onion slices applied after being stung 25+ times by yellowjackets in two seperate instances in ONE DAMN SUMMER.

(A phobia of buzzy stingy things, I haz one now.)

P.S.

I *love* pangolins (and armadillos). So your mentioning of them made me happy!
