So Zimmerman is free, but he is looking at years of hiding and a lifetime of worrying that he might get attacked by a random vigilante stranger with a personal vendetta every time he goes out in public. While my idealistic self believes firmly that we will never improve our lot unless we all work to Be The Better Man, and that fighting fire with fire just leads to more things on fire, on a more human basis I'm having a very difficult time summoning much sympathy for his plight.

I belong to an email loop for writers looking for information about police and EMT procedures, legal stuff, and so forth, which has a LOT of police on it, and the Zimmerman case was the subject of quite some discussion. The consensus of the cops was that legally, there was never any real case against him in the first place.

I really would have liked to have been on that jury, and heard the evidence about what happened between the moment that Zimmerman accosted Martin and the moment that the struggle began, because I think that's the key to the whole thing.

I would, too. All the evidence I got was from media reports. I don't know what the jury heard, but dangit I hope it was compelling.

This case also just serves to showcase that Florida law is BANANAS. I really have no idea what that's all about.

Sympathy for him, no. My sympathy is for anyone who happens to walk or drive near him: this is a man who we know has killed once out of prejudice and irrational fear, who now has an actual reason to fear strangers on the street. I am not a saint, nor even a Christian, and feel no need to give him my sympathy: the world is full of suffering people whose suffering was made by others, or by no human agent. They have my sympathy, and sometimes my help.
