The PseudoKlingon I Could Do Without

Have finally gotten around to watching Farscape, which I was waiting on simply because I knew it would suck me in. It is far too obviously my kind of shit—which as we have previously discussed, include crazy space adventures, blue people, and aliens. The Jim Henson Creature Shop aesthetic is gravy.

Due to a tangle of synapses in my head, this show has acquired the nickname Jim Henson’s Star Trek Babies. Aside from the more obvious reasons, partly this is because I am starting to suspect that Chris Pine got confused and watched this instead of Star Trek for his inspiration. Seriously, toss in a few stupid 90’s pop culture references and Baby Kirk turns into Baby Crichton.

Also, in the continuing saga of My Crushes Are Not The Same Your Crushes, I am totally in love with Pilot. I always wind up zooming in on the Mild-Mannered Nerd Character, even if he also happens to be the Giant Goat-Faced Cockroach Character. Plus, I want to introduce him to Gypsy. I think those two would get along very well. ("Do you have a big dumb squarehead spouting pop culture references all over your ship, too?" "Oh, let me TELL you.")

My point is, BRB CRAZY SPACE ADVENTURE TIME. See you on the other side of this series.

Somehow I feel like everyone is totally in love with Pilot. (I am also totally in love with Lani Tupu's OTHER persona, but that is because I think Crais has an awesome character arc.)

The other day Ben and I were talking about drawing a comic that basically consisted of a few strips of "Babies" versions of different science fiction and fantasy TV Shows. We decided that Baby Pilot would be the cutest thing ever.

Damn, yes, that would be adorable. (Do they start out as larvae? Not enough information on this. But I imagine if they can make Pilot adorable, they can make Larva!Pilot adorable.)

I still haven't gotten very far in Crais's character arc, but he's pretty promising so far, too.

Clearly they must start out as larvae, since both you and I had the same initial reaction to the idea of a baby Pilot.

Also, it takes a while for Crais to get interesting... But when he does, it was pretty awesome.

... Crais just got interesting.

Fuck, now it's bedtime.

Now I want to doodle a painfully adorable chibi Pilot grub.

Responding to your other comment below ... D'Argo is still a bit two-dimensional to me. I am, however, glad his Warrior Dream includes a picket fence and a garden.

Well, it's partly the aesthetic--he's a gorgeous design. Mostly I want to hang out in his Pilot Chamber and play D&D or something with him. Nerds represent!

The PseudoKlingon ends up making his own guitars and playing rock-paper-scissors against himself - so he's not entirely bad...

Sure--AFTER he hacks off my main man's arm with his dumbass swordgun. Ass.

Actually, it's mostly just that he feels like a cheap knockoff. The others have their own individuality, but D'Argo is coming off as a Go-Bot. The others make up for him, but still. Star Trek's got Klingons covered already, and they do it better.

D'Argo gets better, he really does. Eventually you learn the REAL reason he went to prison...

Granted, he doesn't seem to ever get away from saying "I will not be imprisoned again!" every other episode, but... he'll get more interesting.

omg I am so sucked into Farscape as well. My gurlfrand started me watching it a few months back. I can't stop seeing it as basically a table-top campaign made televised. It's /really/ made me miss gaming. Her angle on the whole thing is an obsession with sentient and/or living ships, which I like to roll my eyes at but secretly think they're pretty awesome. Yep.

Hee hee! It does have a campaigny feel to it, and this is from someone who doesn't even DO tabletop RPGs.

I always liked the idea of living ships, but I especially like the symbiont idea. The leviathans remind me a little of an upcoming character in my own Doctors! universe, which always makes me extra happy.

Has your girlfriend read the Lando Calrissian Adventures? That trilogy has sentient starships in it!
