I Am "Bloody Rose McCoy" For A REASON

So I kept trying to do some basic exercising—running through forms, jogging in place, whatever—the last few days, and have failed miserably on account of cramps, made worse by the fact that I’m trying out one o’ them menstrual cups I hear the kids going on about. And yet despite the fact that it’s far smaller than the bucket I could probably use,* it has thrown the entire lower end into massive WE GOT MOVIE SIGN pandemonium.

“Well,” thought I, “at least I can do some upper-body stuff, right?”

Basically, what I’m trying to say is, I need to diversify my upper-body repertoire, because after two days of chest fly reps, GODDAMN ARE MY ARMS TIRED. Perhaps I will take tomorrow off from Exercise Time. Pushing book trucks will count as my workout.

Meanwhile, in news from inside my head, I was smoothing out the bumps in a conversation in Doctors! and all of a sudden Ghil had whipped out the space! equivalent of wallet photos of his kids to show the others. What the hell, y’all, I didn’t even know he HAD kids. I mean, sure, they both are rather more of a background presence in his life, but … damn, the things your own characters will keep secret from you if you let ’em.

Yeah, I'm getting the hang of it. It just seems to have surprised the abdomen with its alien presence. I have never done tampons, you see, because for me there really was no point.

Most times I'm actually fine during the period, but every once in a while TEH CRAMPS hit me, and I refuse to exercise. When I'd beg off Tae Kwon Do, everyone just figured I was lazy, which is a fair assumption to be sure ...

I have heard (from a fitness professional) that it's best to exercise upper one day, lower the next, etc. to give the muscle groups time to rest and rebuild. Failing that, she suggests doing the full routine one day, taking the next day off, and doing the routine again, etc. Alternate! Walking and the like is always good, though.

I want to read Doctors!

You're actually right! I am just stupid and thought I'd get SOMETHING in to make up for the lack of exercise.

I also want to do swimming, but this week ... well. Not a good time.

[identity profile] chibicharibdys.livejournal.com 2010-01-25 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It's my period, too, and also my exercise day. Which uh. Not happening. Tea and stupid TV is what's happening. :)

Also, I have now looked up menstrual cups, and they look VERY USEFUL.

:) The swimming was one of the main reasons I looked into them, myself.

Which cup are you using? I have found that, either because of my anatomy or because of my ineptitude, although the Instead fits just fine it is prone to leakage. Granted, I bleed like a stuck pig for a day and half, but the thing has enough storage space that it should hold *something*.

Nah, I'm getting the hang of it, although their claim that it can be emptied once in the morning and once in the evening is laughably optimistic.

Mine's a Diva. Seems to work well once I figure it out.

[identity profile] dormouse-in-tea.livejournal.com 2010-01-25 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
*snerk* Before my D&C and ablation, I was emptying mine every hour or hour and a half, the first day. Because it was full.

Those claims are for NORMAL periods. Rather than rampaging forces of DEATH AND DESTRUCTION.

That's it. I am sewing a discreet cotton Jolly Roger cotton pouch for my purple Ladycup.

I might still have some of my Jolly Roger fabric around here somewhere, come to think of it ...

Also, this development is YOUR FAULT. Just thought you'd like to know.

Yay! I'm a bad influence!

Stick with it, there are some growing pains involved in first starting out. And emptying it much more often than twice a day is not unheard of for ladies with a particularly insistent Aunt Flo.

Oh, also, a heating pad makes cramps much more easily tolerable.

I keep thinking of looking into one of those, although the last few times the seas have run red, it's been to a far FAR lesser degree than 'usual' and the new little micro-thin overnight pads from Always have handled it OK when I remember to change 'em 2-3 times a day, and they're so small I don't feel the raging eco-guilt I used to when I'd go through five or six of the huge-ass overnighters or such in a day.

But I totally agree still about the Blackbeard's Brand too. I would buy those ANY DAY over the damn flowery powdery packaged stuff. Augh.

I want to echo everyone else's "growing pains!" comment re: menstrual cups and add that for whatever reason, I can't use mine on the first day of my period. The rest of the time it's fine and dandy and easy to ignore, but on Day 1 it seems to actually aggravate my cramps (never good news!).

As for exercising - chibicharibdys has it right in that you should never do strength work for the same muscles two days in a row. They need a day to recover! But light work actually helps recovery - like going for a jog or a swim. Personally I am more comfortable with the latter mid-bloodweek, but tastes differ :)
