Whew, ok, I am so glad I am already laying down. Dude, I read one of the Elsie books on project Gutenberg when one of my friends talked about how creepy it was. It was like a particularly grisly train wreck, one with entrails and beheadings and possibly cannibalism. SO WRONG.
But anyway, on a less all caps-y note, I think the Vanage dolls actually have a pretty sweet message with all the embracing the beauty of diversity. Yes, they overemphasize the love of God bit a little (a lot) much for a non Christian, but that is one very ethnically diverse little cast of dolls. As a little girl I'd have shanked someone for that Bella doll. As an adult I'll probably just abuse my credit card.
Also love the little redheaded doll, though I keep looking at her going "hmm... with an eye color change you could be Alanna or Anne." But my husband took one look at the dolls and went "That's not Alanna, that one is your friend Liz, and the other one (Bella) is you." Obviously it's never to late to project yourself on your toys.
