Sound Trackin' Across The Universe ...
I AM SURE ALL MY GEEK BUDDIES ARE WAITING BREATHLESSLY FOR IMPRESSIONS OF THE NEW STAR TREK FILM. WELL, I HAVE BEEN TO THE MIDNIGHT SHOWING, MY FRIENDS, AND I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT THIS MOVIE IS VERY, VERY LOUD.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO HEREBY INAUGURATE BABY SPOCK* INTO MY COLLECTION OF PEOPLE FOR WHOM I HAVE DECLARED UNDYING LOVE.
AND WITH THE SPECTACULAR SCENE INVOLVING KIRK, SULU, AND SOME GUY IN A RED SPACESUIT, I AM FORCED TO CONCLUDE THAT THIS FRANCHISE HAS VERY WEIRD IDEAS OF FANSERVICE.
IN CONCLUSION: DUUUUDE.
*JUST TO BE CLEAR, BABY SPOCK IS THE ZACHARY QUINTO ONE. I HAVE DUBBED THE BRIEFLY-APPEARING CHILD VERSION THE SPOCKLET.

I admit, I cheered and applauded at Ensign Ricky Redshirt's fiery demise. The catchphrases made me nod and go "Uh huh," but a rousing and inspiring salute to the fine tradition of the original show was enough to get me going.

If you don't explode, decapitate or completely incinerate at least one redshirt, it is NOT a Star Trek anything. Clearly, they have learnt this.
The only catchphrase that didn't make me groan as well as giggle (I admit, I giggled at all of them as well as groaning) was 'I'm a doctor, not a physicist!' But I think that's because I was struck quite forcibly by what a FABULOUS casting choice Karl Urban was for Bones.
I spent MOST of the movie debating with myself over whether or not the guy playing Kirk was the guy who played Iceman in the X-men films. Turns out he isn't. But it was very distracting!

They did a pretty good job casting, I gotta say. I liked it when the actors would try to insert some familiar mannerism from the old show, like how Kirk lounges in the captain's chair or Spock's eyebrow-pop, because it never QUITE worked but it was a pretty good try.
