The Answers

Okay, here we go—the answers, behind the cut in case anyone still wants to play.  (Emily? Liz?  I know there’s some stuff you’d recognize …) Also, because I’m pompous, you can have commentary, too!

  1. When you’re down and troubled, and you need a helping hand, and nothing, oh, nothing is going right … - “You’ve Got A Friend” by James Taylor, made famous by Carole King—I like both of them. Although I’ve also got a soft spot for Vincent Price’s version on the Muppet Show.
  2. Cream tangerine and montelimat, a ginger sling with a pineapple heart … - “Savoy Truffle” by the Beatles.  A song that lists desserts.
  3. Number 54, the house with the bamboo door, bamboo roof and bamboo walls—it’s even got a bamboo floor! - “House of Bamboo” by Southern Culture on the Skids.
  4. Well, a traveling man’s affliction makes it hard to settle down, but I’m stuck here in the flatlands while my heart is homeward bound. - “Neal’s Fandango” by the Doobie Brothers.
  5. Well, she sneaks around the world from Kiev to Carolina, she’s a sticky-fingered filcher from Berlin down to Belize … - “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” by Rockapella.
  6. Do I attract you; do I repulse you with my queasy smile? - “Grace Kelly” by Mika, who’s apparently trying to be Queen. There’s a part where they hit a really high note and sing “I can be hurtful, I can be purple” and I always want to sing “I can be happy, I can be Batman” instead. Everything can be improved with Batman.
  7. Don’t know why I love you like I do—all the trouble you put me through … - “Take Me To The River” by Talking Heads. My siblings and I argue over whose version is better—theirs or Annie Lennox’s. I like Annie’s.
  8. `O Kalākaua he inoa, `o ka pua mae`ole i ka lā. - This is a Hawaiian mele, “He Mele Inoa `O Kalākua,” sung by Mark Keali’i Ho’omalu. Known best as “He Mele No Lilo” from the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack, where Ho’omalu sings with the Kamehameha Schools Children’s Chorus.
  9. Off to the harbor under truncheon in the morning, I got a press gang looking after me. - “Cross the Ocean” by the Real McKenzies. A fast-paced heavy metal pirate song.  It’s awesome.
  10. Gummed up, brain dead, can’t decide. You can’t pray enough; you can’t hide - “Ask DNA” by Raj Ramayya, by Yoko Kanno.  From the Cowboy Bebop movie, which sucks, because when my alien doctors get made into a TV show I wanted that song to grace an introductory montage.
  11. Se me acaba el argumento, y la metodología, cada vez que se aparece frente a mí tu anatomía. - “Ciega, Sordomuda” by Shakira. I don’t know about what she sounds like now that she’s been assimilated, but she was awesome back when the US hadn’t gotten to her.  Poetic, cerebral, gorgeous, and she played her own guitar.
  12. New York, New York is everything they say, and no place that I’d rather be! - “Heart of Rock’n’Roll” by Huey Lewis and the News.
  13. Fight fiercely, Harvard, fight fight fight! Demonstrate to them our skill! - “Harvard Fight Song” by Tom Lehrer, and the next lines are just as awesome: “Albeit they posess the might, nonetheless we have the will!”
  14. You take one part Buddha, and two parts cat, run them through your computer, that’s where he’s at. - “Follow That Man” by Boz Scaggs.  I believe I mentioned before that this is why Boz Scaggs is cooler than you: he rhymes “Buddha” and “computer.” Have you ever done that?
  15. Well, there is no such thing as you. It doesn’t matter what you do. - “Tougher Than It Is” by Cake.
  16. From the day we arrive on the planet, and, blinking, step into the sun, there is more to see than can ever be seen, more to do than can ever be done - “Circle of Life,” performed by the Tenth Doctor. No.  Sorry, that’s The Lion King, and it’s performed by Carmen Twillie.
  17. Mary Ann and Wanda were the best of friends all through their high school days; both members of the 4-H club, both active in the FFA - “Goodbye, Earl” by the Dixie Chicks.
  18. Joan was quizzical, studied pataphysical science in the home—late nights all alone with a test tube, oh oh-oh oh … - “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” by The Beatles. The happiest song about a serial killer ever.  It occurs to me that I have two cheery murder songs on this list.  Read into that what you wish.
  19. Sometimes late when things are real and people share the gift of gab between themselves … - “Tin Man” by America. I am a die-hard America fan.
  20. One evening as the sun went down and the jungle fire was burning, down the track came a hobo hikin’, and he said “Boys, I’m not turning.” - “The Big Rock Candy Mountain” by Harry McClintock
  21. She was there at the bar; she heard my guitar. She was long and tall; she was the queen of them all. - “Last Night” by the Traveling Wilburys, a superband consisting of George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynn, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty. Another cheery song that features crime, though fortunately this one doesn’t turn violent.
  22. If I had boots like Emmy Lou’s, I’d be a big old star: rhinestones on my BVDs and a Hummingbird guitar. - “Boots Like Emmy Lou’s” by Janis Ian.
  23. Whispering wind came uninvited, looking for somewhere else to go.- “Song of Long Ago” by Carole King—a song she claims to have written “under the heavy influence of James Taylor.”
  24. Drivin’ that train, high on cocaine! Casey Jones you’d better watch your speed. - “Casey Jones” by the Grateful Dead.
  25. Mother told me, yes she told me, I’d meet girls like you. - “Surrender” by Cheap Trick.
  26. Every time I see your face, I’m reminded of the places we used to go. - “Photograph” by Ringo Starr
  27. Why are there so many songs about rainbows and what’s on the other side? - “The Rainbow Connection,” sung by Kermit the Frog.  Interestingly, the most recognizable song on this list.
  28. Alo, salut, sunt eu, un haiduc. Si te rog, iubirea mea, primeste fericirea. - “Dragostea Din Tei” by O-Zone.  Also known as “The Numa Numa Song.” Original song is in Romanian.
  29. Shiver my timbers, shiver my soul, yo ho heave ho! There are men whose hearts are as black as coal—yo ho heave ho! - “Shiver My Timbers” from Muppet Treasure Island.
  30. The gold of Cortés, the jewels of Pizarro will seem like mere trinkets by this time tomorrow! - “Mine, Mine, Mine” from Disney’s Pocahontas. Sung by Major Charles Emerson Winchester, III in a duet with himself (really) and Crazy Mel Gibson.
