Bad Sign Number Six Million And Eight

Somehow, I find this picture by Michael Wagner to be one of the most magnificent and beautiful that I've ever seen.

No, I am not kidding.  The lighting, and the eye, and the contours ... especially the contours ... I could just get lost tracing its build and imagining it moving ...

I realized I was in trouble when I heard H.R. Giger say that he wanted his Alien creature to be beautiful, and I thought, "And you succeeded spectacularly, sir."  The thing is, his vision was influenced by opium.  Me, I'm like that without the opium.

But come on.  Unless you're my mom, how can you not find that thing gorgeous?

I am SO with you on all counts.

It is gorgeous. I can imagine a sort of bounding lope- a long-legged rabbit with both hind legs fused.

The Alien may be beautiful, but the Alien's mother is absolutely smashing. :)

I find the artwork aesthetically compelling, but I wouldn't call it gorgeous. But that's me, and I suspect you and I have different ideas about beauty.

A life of geek sensibilities will do that to ya. ;)

Which leads me to wonder if there's a general geek idea of what constitutes beauty, or if different branches of geekdom have different ideals. Certainly there are different ideals for us medievalists, depending on time period and locale of interest.

It's definitely dramatic and compelling.

However...

Am I the only one who thinks Mr Wagner thinks too much about sex?

*grin* No, but then the phallus IS rather a basic design parameter ...

Plus, you can't say that Giger's design isn't just a TEENSY bit sex-lookin' as well, and I think that's beautiful too. Weird beautiful, but beautiful nonetheless.

I just got Freuded!

That vision does a xenophile's eyes good. ^_^
