Upon further consideration, I guess the smattering of weak attempts to parody other Magic School novels was meant to take a shot at being subversive, but he couldn't really commit to them because then we might not take his awesome character seriously if he follows through with it. Every so often you'd get a sense that he was tiptoeing toward some Pratchett-style, only to run away again before anyone could catch him.
