You ever read Understood, Betsy? Loved that book as a kid. The main character moves from the city to the country, straight into a small (13 kids, max) one room schoolhouse that goes right up to the 8th grade.
The VERY FIRST thing does does in that school is read aloud. We spend a good page on how much she HATES reading aloud (though she loves to read), because you spend the whole class listening to everybody else stumble, only to read your one line (which you could read with your eyes shut) which doesn't even make SENSE by the time it comes to you because you've read it over and over - and that's on the days the teacher gets to you at all!
Her new teacher immediately bumps her up to read with the seventh grade. I cheer every time I read that.
