I guess it surprises me sometimes that people forget that they are white, because living in Mexico and Hawaii when I was young I didn't have a chance to forget. I'm, you know, one haole chick. In Hawaii, of course, it's not the same thing, but it's enough to drive many white people away from - because white is recognized as a race there, instead of 'the default,' some (white) people perceive it as racism and hostility and leave.
