Now that, I did not know. I did know about the leaping buildings bit. And I hear he was vaguely based on the title character in a pulp sci-fi novel called "Gladiator", but I haven't read it yet. (I am not, as such, a comic geek myself, but I am close friends with enough of them that I try to keep up on the trivia).
